Not only is Thac Ba Lake outstanding for its pristine beauty, but it is also captivating due to its historical and cultural values and its potential for developing ecotourism and resort tourism.

Boasting crystal-clear waters, over 1,300 islands of varying sizes, and picturesque mountain scenery, Thac Ba Lake (Lao Cai province) is likened to "Ha Long Bay in the mountains", making it an attractive destination for nature lovers.

Besides its pristine beauty, this place is also captivating due to its historical and cultural values and its potential for developing ecotourism and resort tourism .

The dreamy beauty of "Ha Long Bay in the mountains"
Located in Lao Cai province, about 140km from the center of Hanoi, Thac Ba Lake is one of the three largest artificial lakes in Vietnam. Formed during the construction of the Thac Ba Hydroelectric Power Plant in the 1970s, the lake covers an area of ??over 23,000 hectares and features more than 1,300 islands of varying sizes scattered throughout.

Surrounded by lush green mountains, forests, and crystal-clear waters, Thac Ba Lake boasts a harmonious blend of river and mountain beauty. The blue of the lake's surface blends with the sky and the drifting clouds, creating a peaceful and poetic natural landscape that captivates visitors who set foot in this region.

One of the most beloved experiences here is taking a boat ride through the islands, admiring the natural scenery and exploring the fascinating caves. In the early morning, the lake is often covered in a thin layer of mist, while at sunset, the landscape is bathed in romantic colors, offering a sense of tranquility and escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The lake area also boasts numerous caves with unique stalactite formations and natural rock formations, such as Thuy Tien Cave, Xuan Long Cave, and Bach Xa Cave, along with landmarks associated with the names Thac Ba and Thac Ong waterfalls. These destinations enrich the landscape exploration journey for tourists.

Explore hydroelectric power plants and local culture
Besides its spectacular natural scenery, Thac Ba Lake is also associated with a hydroelectric project that holds significant importance in the economic development of the country.

Visiting the Thac Ba Hydroelectric Power Plant gives tourists the opportunity to learn about the construction process and discover the legacy of one of Vietnam's first hydroelectric power plants.

After touring the factory, visitors can combine their trip with a visit to the Thac Ba Mother Goddess Temple, a spiritual site located on Hoang Thi Mountain. Nestled against the mountain, overlooking the Chay River to the northeast and Cao Bien Mountain in the distance, the temple offers a serene atmosphere while remaining deeply connected to the religious life of the local people.

Besides tourist attractions, the Thac Ba Lake area is also home to many ethnic groups such as the Kinh, Tay, Nung, Mong, Dao, Phu La, and Cao Lan... Each community contributes to a diverse cultural landscape with unique customs, traditions, and ways of life.

Visitors can learn about the lives of the locals in stilt houses nestled on the mountainside, explore traditional fishing methods, and enjoy local dishes such as sticky rice cooked in bamboo tubes, wild banana flower salad, chicken cooked with sour bamboo shoots, fish salad, and shrimp salad.

During festivals, traditional cultural activities such as the New Rice Festival, the New Year's Dance, and folk songs create a unique charm for the lake region. This is also an opportunity for tourists to learn more about the spiritual life, customs, and cultural identity preserved by the community through many generations.

Experience ecotourism amidst nature
With its vast space, fresh climate, and unspoiled natural landscape, Thac Ba Lake is suitable for many outdoor tourism activities. Visitors can go boating, kayaking in suitable areas, organize picnics, camp by the lake, or relax amidst the lush green mountains and forests.

The open areas by the lake are ideal for group activities, sightseeing, and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. Water activities must be conducted in designated areas, with safety equipment and precautions in place.

The combination of natural landscapes, exploratory experiences, and local culture makes Thac Ba Lake a destination for those seeking relaxation while exploring a region rich in potential in the Northwest.

Orientation for developing Thac Ba Lake into a national tourist area
According to the plan, by 2040, Thac Ba Lake National Tourist Area aims to become a branded tourism, resort, and cultural center, possessing a synchronized infrastructure system, modern facilities, diverse, unique, and high-quality tourism products, capable of competing regionally and internationally.

Thac Ba Lake is envisioned as a key national tourism area in the midland and mountainous region of Northern Vietnam, with distinctive products linked to the lake's ecosystem and national cultural values. The focus areas include ecotourism, resort tourism, sightseeing, historical and cultural research, conferences, and seminars.

The plan also defines the spatial development orientation for tourism in the Tan Huong-Dai Dong, Linh Son-Cao Bien, Phuc Ninh-Cam Nhan, and Lieu Do-Vinh Lac areas; and organizes gateways, corridors, development zones, and key tourism destinations to create connections between destinations.

Clearly defining the direction and scope of development is expected to create favorable conditions for attracting investors to research and propose large-scale, high-quality tourism projects. Alongside this, the conservation of natural ecosystems, biodiversity, and the promotion of local cultural values are considered crucial elements for sustainable tourism development.

With its unique riverine landscape, abundant island system, historical landmarks, and diverse cultural identity, Thac Ba Lake possesses many advantages for developing into an attractive ecotourism and resort destination. Effectively exploiting these values while preserving the local nature and culture will contribute to enhancing Thac Ba Lake's position on the Vietnamese tourism map.
